ABOUT THE
DIAMONDS
Brilliant Facts on Dazzling Diamonds
-
Diamonds are the hardest known substance
on earth and the gemstone with the most sparkle when
well-cut.
-
Diamonds are composed of common carbon,
like graphite in a lead pencil. Billions of years ago,
extreme forces of heat and pressure (conditions not in
existence today) transformed the carbon into diamond
deep below the surface of the earth. This volcanic
mass then broke through the earth`s surface to cool in
Kimberlite pipes.
-
Diamonds were first discovered in India
more than 2,800 years ago.
-
Of all the diamonds mined today, only 50
percent are judged to be of jem quality.
-
The quality and value of a diamond is
determined by four characteristics the cut, colour,
clarity and carat weight.
-
The major diamond producing countries
today include Australia, Zaire, Botswana, The USSR and
South Africa.
-
The four most important diamond cutting
centres in the world are India, Israel, Antwerp and
New York.
-
Most diamonds are cut with 58 facets to
reveal maximum sparkle, fire and brilliance.
-
Before a diamond is placed on a woman's
hand, it will probably touch at least four continents
and benefit from the skill of many
international craftsmen.
-
The word "Diamond" comes from the
ancient Greek word "adamas", meaning unconquerable.
-
The ancient Greeks thought diamonds were
tears of the gods.
-
The ancient Romans thought diamonds were
splinters of stars fallen to earth.
-
Diamonds have decorated kings, inspired
poets, adorned celebrities and brought untimely death
to both the famous and the infamous.
-
But most of all, over the centuries they
have always been seen as the ultimate gift of love.
Mystique Values of Diamonds Which
Come Through the Ages
Hundred of years before Christ, In India, where diamonds
were first discovered, the diamond was valued more for
its magic than for its great beauty. It was thought that
diamonds protected mankind from all combined forces of
evil. In India the color of the diamond was thought to
reflect the caste of the wearer which is why the pure
white diamonds were very precious. Romans thought
diamonds were pieces of stars falling down to earth.
Greeks believed that diamonds were tears of God.
Italians trusted it to protect against poisin.
In 1513 the company of Goldsmiths
defined diamonds as follows :
"The diamond gives strength and virtue and keeps him
away from sins. It also keeps bones and body as a whole.
It enriches him with value and good". For the person
carrying it, it is more valuable than God of Love. It
keeps seeds of a man within womb of his wife and help
him born healthy.
Diamond Care
How to Keep the Fire of Your
Jewellery :
With very simple techniques you can keep
your diamonds fire and brilliance as the first day you
bought them. The key to a diamond's magic is its sparkle
and fire.Lotions, soap and natural skin oils however can
reduce the brilliance of a diamond by leaving a film on
the surface. It only takes a few minutes to clean a
diamond.
Here are 3 cleaning methods:
1) Detergent Bath
Place a mild liquid detergent in a small bowl of warm
water. Then, brush the diamond with a small soft brush
(a toothbrush will do) and rinse under running water.
2) Cold Water Soak
Soak the jewellery for 30 minutes in a 50/50 solution of
cold water and household ammonia. Remove and gently tap
the front and back of the mounting with a small, soft
brush. Dip the jewellery in the solution again and drain
on tissue paper
3) Quick Dip Method
Use any brand name liquid jewellery cleaner and follow
instructions on label.
PROTECTING DIAMONDS
Even when diamonds and precious jewellery
are tucked away, they need special care. Jewellery
should be kept in a fabric-lined jewel case or a box
with compartments or dividers. If placed in one box, each
piece should be wrapped in tissue paper, because a
diamond can scratch and damage another diamond. Though
most women wear a diamond ring twenty-four hours a day,
there are occasions when it should be removed. Do not
wear a diamond ring while doing rough work. Although a
diamond is durable, it can be chipped by a very hard
blow.
Diamond rings should not come into contact
with chlorine bleach, because it can pit and discolor
the mounting. A jeweller should check the ring once a
year for loose stones and the wear of the mounting. He
can also clean the ring professionally. With proper care,
diamonds can be enjoyed forever.
